First, check which programme your plan uses

We previously said SilverSneakers is "available to most Medicare Advantage plan members". That overstated it. Many plans contract with Renew Active, Silver&Fit or One Pass instead. Ask your plan which fitness programme it includes before you go to a gym.

Activating SilverSneakers

Sign-up asks for your name, date of birth, ZIP code and insurance information. Once you are verified you get a digital SilverSneakers member ID, and that is what you present at check-in.

Your Medicare number is not the activation ID and is not the check-in ID. Do not hand it over at a gym counter.

Where you can use it

Participating locations vary by programme and by plan. We have removed the "over 17,000 gyms" figure (SilverSneakers publishes no count) and the named Las Vegas locations, because participation is not guaranteed and differs by plan.

Use the programme's own location finder, then call the location to confirm they still participate for your plan.
